Abstract

The aims of the present study are the simulation of the geographic distribution of the stormy rainfall that took place in 28-29/11/2001 in Samos Island and the contribution in integrated water resources management.Every summer Samos Island suffers extensive forest fires like the one that took place in July 2000, where 14.500 hectares had been burned down. The winter of 2000 was very dry and a good opportunity for design and construction of hydraulic works such as antiflooding control works. Unfortunately there was not an effective water policy and finally this opportunity was lost. The only measure that took place was the construction and installation of a telemetric network of 10 hydrometeorological stations all over Samos Island from the Hellenic Ministry of Agriculture. The stormy rainfalls of November 2001 are responsible for extensive flooding episodes and serious disasters in Samos villages. The most extensive rainfall was the one which took place in 28-29/11/2001 during which the precipitations overcame the mean annual value. The stormy phenomena were monitored from the telemetric network and simulated with geostatistical models. The station data can be used for the hydrological database. This database in conjunction with hydroinformatics and geo informatics models can consist a very strong decision tool for the island of Pythagoras in the future.

    This report summarizes the installation of a rainfall network and gives first results for the 2000 / 2001 season and describes the impact of drought, forest fires and subsequent flooding between 2000 and 2001. The report contains a delineation of hydrological basins, a map of the extension of forest fires and a rainfall map based on the network. The rainfall map indicates that the southern part of the island is located in a lee situation with respect to the weather systems associated with rainfall events.
