The surface of polymeric insulators possess a more dynamic
behavior than those of ceramic or glass insulators and
undergoes through a series of transitions which may be
crucial for discharge activity and which may increase the risk
of flashover and surface damage. The results obtained from
the measurement of leak currents and the performance of
commercial polymeric insulators, belonging to two different
families Ethylene-Propylene Rubber (EPDM) and Silicone
Rubber (SR), which were exposed to HYDC and HV AC at
the field station of Anneberg during a period of three years
(1989-1991), show an essential difference which may be
attributed to the polymeric material family.
