Abstract
This talk will present some new (and perhaps perplexing) results on the non-parallel stability of mixed forced-free convection boundary layers. Such flows are typically encountered when a hot, low viscosity, fluid flows over a cool surface. The non-parallel evolution of a disturbance is simulated using the PSE (parabolised stability equations) approach. Our results show that an initial Tollmien-Schlichting (TS) wave evolves into a new class of instability. We conjecture that this new mode of instability is linked to the inviscid instabilities that are known to also occur in this class of flows.
