Abstract

This study used information-processing theory as a framework for understanding trends in conceptual development of research presented to the International Communication Association's Information Systems Division. Concepts in titles of papers presented to the Division were analyzed for trends over a 21-year period. Cluster analysis was used to classify concepts on the basis of their linear trend, variability in trend, and annual frequency. Six clusters of trends emerged from the analysis. The content of the increasing clusters, contrasted with decreasing clusters, suggests movement toward the study of cognitive concepts and away from behavioral studies. The analysis also indicates a trend toward theory-driven research that examines the general processes of communication and away from more media-focused examinations that concentrate on specific systems, media, or technologies.
