Balance and speed of walking of women with Colles' fractures

Abstract

The ability to balance and the speed of walking were tested in 41 women with a fracture of the distal radius sustained six weeks to three months earlier and in 20 women of the same age with the same fracture but sustained one year before. The results were compared with 123 age-matched control women without earlier fracture. The group of women with recent Colles' fracture had impaired balance when compared with the control group. No difference was found between the group of women with one-year-old fractures and the control group. No difference between any groups was found for gait velocity. Impaired balance in the early period after a Colles' fracture could be a reflection of psychological fear of falling rather than long-standing somatic disease. A training programme in the early rehabilitation period after a fracture of the distal end of the radius could therefore not only prevent further falls but also rebuild patients' security and confidence.
