Abstract
The complex Fc(bipy)Cl4bipy-H (1) (bipy is 2,2'-bipyridine) was
prepared from the reaction of FeCl3 center dot 6H(2)O with
2,2'-bipyridine in a 0.1 M aqueous solution of HCl. The same method was
employed to make Fe(dmbipy)(2)Cl-2FeCl4(2) (dmbipy is
5,5'-dimethyl-2,2'bipyridine). Both complexes were characterized by IR,
UV-Vis and H-1 NMR spectroscopies and single-crystal X-ray diffraction.
These complexes are HS with a spin multiplicity of 6. Crystal data for I
at 20 degrees C: orthorhombic, space group Pna2(1), a = 15.938(2)
angstrom. b = 9.3068(15) angstrom, c = 14.513(3) angstrom, Z = 4, R, =
0.0406 and for 2 at 20 degrees C: triclinic, space group P \$(1) over
bar \$, a = 8.6072(13) angstrom, b = 18.008(3) angstrom, c = 20.311(3)
angstrom, alpha = 103.652(13)degrees,beta = 95.421(12)degrees, gamma =
