Abstract

When our book series "The Rock Paintings of the Upper Brandberg" was launched 17 years ago at the turn of 1990, we were aware that this was a step into terra incognita. We did not know whether such a publication project could be maintained in our times where projects tend to have a much shorter lifespan. Having started at the south-western "corner" of the mountain with the volume Ämis Gorge" in 1989 and publishing the subsequent volumes following the gorges around the mountain in an anti-clockwise direction, we come back to the starting point with the present volume. Of the three gorges, whose depictions we render in this book, the last is Domschlucht ("cathedral gorge") which has a common border with Amis. Yet we have to admit that this time we slightly depart from the principle of publishing the gorges in a strictly anti-clockwise sequence. Domschlucht should be the last one, since it is separated from Naib and Circus by Numas Gorge, which awaits the seventh volume. Due to the enormous quantity of depictions found in Naib Gorge, the reproductions of rock paintings in this book start with site I 59 at the point where the previous volume no. V of the series had to end.
