Zusammenfassung

In the presence of constant wind with speed of 1 to around 7 meters per second (InlS) for single conductor and from 4 to 18 meters per second (ln1S) for bundled conductors, especially if acting at a right angle to the line . conductors, overhead power transmission line conductors are affected by wind-induced vibration. Conventional shield wire, OPGW and line hardware are subjected to this vibration as well. The vibration can be due to Aeolian vibration or wake- induced oscillation. Aeolian vibration affects all types of overhead line conductors whereas wake-induced oscillation is peculiar . to bundled conductors. Fatigue failure of strands in overhead conductors is the most common form of damage resulting fTOm the wind-induced vibration. Vibration may also cause fatigue failure on other line components such as dampers, armor rods, insulators, line fittings and tower members. These damages reduce the life expectancy of the power transmission line as a whole. Moreover, the existence of the damaging vibration on the line conductors could increase the maintenance mnning costs of these lines. Some utilities test the line conductors against the vibration phenomena and decide changes on the damping system of the overhead line conductors accordingly. Modifications or other accessories which cClI1 ~e installed or added to the line such as warning ~ystelns, without considering these as factors, may Increase the vibration on the conductors. T?is paper discusses the methods of monitoring these vIbrations and the most common practices III determining the best workable condition. The paper also discusses the most common factors inVOlved during the analysis of conductor motions. These factors are conductor design, ambient temperature, conductor tension, vibration frequency and general line design aspects such as the terrain and how these factors could affect the line performance and recommended solutions for improvements. In addition, the paper highlights some concerns that have to be taken before and after the constmction of the overhead power lines to deal with and overcome this phenomenon.
