- (private-note)species that grow in exposed environments have greater frost resistance (but uncovered and covered plants of the same species showed inconsistent differences) loss of frost resistance in summer was more raipd in the exposed species levels of frost resistance were greater than european alpine environments, but similarly high as trop alpine envs greatest potential for frost damage in spring- min temperatures closest to lt50 used cphyll flourescence to assess damage- after a few days in the fridge after freezing to estimate LT50 so of course it's going to be a higher level of frost resistance to people who do electrolyte leakage on continental alpine plants. pffft. c.f. Koerner 1999 Reitsma 1994 A hypothesis of theirs was that since NZ has such an unpredictable oceanic envorinment, when freezing can happen at any time of the year, the plants should be more frost-resistant. They measured temperature 1.3m ABOVE ground. Cooled things at 5oCh-1 Freezing tolerance correlated with highest min temperature in the preceeding 4 weeks max frost resistance in late winter Older tissue was less frost resistant than younger tissue lt50 is used because lt100 and lt0 are hard to determine: there's a sigmoidal relationship of temperature with damage. small plant parts have a greater ability to supercool (you read this somewhere else- cite the other place... what's that You've lost it? well read Robberecht and Juntilla 1992) conclude that snowbank spp unlikely to be damaged by frost at any time of the year due to photoperiod effects (?) NZ alps spp more frost resistant than EUropean alps spp
