Abstract
This paper presents a method for the design of Intelligent Support(IS) for Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) systems. In particular itdeals with challenges that arise from the need to elicite precise, concise, and operational knowledge from experts as a means ofinforming the design of intelligent components of a TELenvironment. We revisit related work in the field of informationsystems and human-computer interaction and emphasise that research anddesign based on computer-mediated sessions should rely on a process towhich we refer to as tapering of their communication capacity, that isa gradual reduction of the interaction bandwidth between student andhidden operator, as well as the message freedom of the latter. Wepresent the application of the methodology and examples from our workwith an exploratory environment. We then discussthe generality of ourmethod and some pragmatic constraints which may be useful in similarresearch.
