Changing understandings of 'public' and 'private' in higher education: The United Kingdom case

Abstract

The writer examines the distinction between private and public higher education in Great Britain, analyzing the two major British higher education reports published since the 1960s. Based on his analysis, he argues that the contemporary British higher education system is trapped between and is suffering from the conflicting pressures of privatization and nationalization.
