Abstract

The present article reports on an empirical study of how and why translators manipulate texts and the reasons for major manipulative shifts in translation. The study involved ten female and ten male experienced English‐Persian translators. The empirical part comprised three phases: an initial pilot study, a translation task involving the twenty translators, and interviews with the translators. Among other things, the study showed that, as a translation‐specific activity, ‘manipulation ‘ is ideologically motivated.
