Abstract

Permutation tests were first treated by Fisher (1935). These tests provide valid significance tests when no random sample from a defined population is available. The observation units or subjects must be randomly assigned to the different experimental conditions. The randomness does not refer to the selection of the sample, but to the allocation of the people. However, Fisher described the method as impractical because of the increased computing effort and the 1935 not yet very mature calculating machines.
