Abstract

A formalism based on path integrals to describe fluctuations around thermodynamic equilibrium 1 is extended to non-equilibrium stationary states. The scheme allows to calculate all the statistical properties of the system for the singular case in which one of the physical fields is conserved. It is shown that the correlation functions can be written only in terms of the noise strength and the dynamic matrix obtained from the time evolution equations of the system. It is then solved the example of the dynamic structure factor for a fluid between two horizontal parallel plates subjected to a small external temperature gradient. The noise strength is obtained by assuming that the fluctuations out from but near equilibrium have the same statistical properties as in equilibrium 2. 1) A. McKane and F. Vazquez, Phys. Rev.
