Abstract

The author offers opinions on online journalism and newspaper and mass media Web site management. He notes that following the collapse of the dot.com bubble in 2000-2002, many news organizations including the New York Times Co. made major layoffs among their Web site staffs, a decision which proved to be a financial disaster. Despite the far worse overall economic conditions, this has not happened to the same extent in 2008. The author states that the large layoffs among newspaper and television journalists will still hamper the operations of their Web sites. He states that the problem remains the relative lack of income to be generated from Internet advertising despite the explosive growth of Web site viewership.
