.
Technische Universität München, Fakultät für Wirtschaftswissenschaften, München, Dissertation, (June 2012)

Abstract

The dissertation analyses the internationalization activities of Chinese manufacturing companies which have invested in Germany. On the basis of an intensive analysis of the existing literature on the one hand, and of qualitative exploratory case studies on the other the globalization strategies of Chinese companies will be presented in historical perspective, and ideal-typical models of management and industrial relations in German and Chinese companies will be described. The second part of the dissertation has its focus on the empirical results of three case studies. One of the main findings is that, obviously, gaining technology know-how is the main driving force behind the Chinese investments in German companies. As far as one may judge on the basis of an explorative study, successful cases are characterized by a management strategy of the Chinese parent company which is very cautious with interventions in the everyday operational running of their German subsidiaries. The main reason for this is that cultural differences between Chinese and German companies are perceived as being of considerable relevance by the Chinese management; they have to be respected in order to be successful.
