Abstract

Plastic cards are now commonplace in many countries as an adjunct to cash in transactions. The author discusses how far they will go to replacing cash and cheques. The author discusses coin handling and coin operated equipment and new coin recognition principles. The increase in the number of automatic teller machines, automation of cheque handling, and the increase in cards and card systems, particularly for EFTPOS, are also described. The author discusses smart cards and gives examples of the use of prepayment cards
