Abstract

In this paper we present a new concept for geometric auto-calibration of back projection, stereoscopic virtual-realitysystems. The general purpose of virtual reality (VR) is not restricted to passive visualisations, but can also be seen for interactive clinical, scientific or entertainment applications. The following main aspects have been investigated: 1. Registration of geometric projection properties 2. Algebraic description and correction of projection errors 3. Universal employment for arbitrary 3D real-time environments It will be shown that the registration process is tolerant against strong scatter light effects. The calculation of the pre-warping correction parameters can be done for single and overlayed projections. Moreover, this approach does not influence the base architecture and effect bandwidth of existing VR-frameworks, because of an independent second rendering pass.
