Abstract
We present here a summary of the main developments obtained in the first two years of the Gerindo research project. The aim of this project is to attend the increasing demand for software capable of dealing with information stored in large document databases, such as the World Wide Web. It uniffies efforts of researchers from three different Brazilian universities to develop core technologies to most of the applications related to processing documents demanded by the new information society. These efforts are concentrated in five main research areas: document categorization, semi structured data management, information retrieval models, efficiency for information retrieval and data mining. Besides the important contributions related to the five main areas of study described here, the interaction of researchers is starting to produce, as a side effect, the combination of different approaches of distinct areas to solve particular problems. The stronger interaction between researchers has brought new opportunities for combining efforts and we believe this interaction will allow the project to produce even stronger results on its next stage.
