Abstract
How do definitions work in the humanities? A study into art history terms
The aim of the article is to determine how definitions of key art history terms are structured in popular scientific books for children. Definitions are compared with theoretical approaches to definition and with the definitions contained in a specialist dictionary. The corpus for the analy- sis was the book ʻSie bauten eine Kathedraleʻ (2012) by David Macaulay. Although this is a translation from English, it was treated as if it were an original German text. The subject- specific dictionary was the pictorial lexicon ʻBildwörterbuch der Kunstʻ (2000) by Heinrich Lützeler.
