Abstract
The purpose of this case study is to investigate the integration of a patient advocacy
program into current healthcare service initiatives as a means to enhance patient comfort
and satisfaction. More specifically, it will identify the strategy behind the implementation of a
patient advocacy program for a non-profit healthcare organization in the southeastern United
States. In an effort to become more patient centric within the healthcare environment, patient
advocates are used to safeguard patients’ autonomy while acting as a liaison between
patients and staff. The observations suggest that this phenomenon of volunteerism plays an
important role in both the patient experience and the support given to hospital staff to meet
their goals.
