Aesthetics are a crucial variable in the equation of the translation process. This is especially true for literary texts. The aesthetic position is even more visible in relation with literature marked by dialectal and sociolectal features, because the final outcome is determined to a higher degree by the personal taste of the translator as well as the translation conventions. Both result from an aesthetic conception based on canonical literature. It explains why most translators choose to neutralize this type of linguistic marking, even though this strategy produces a substantially different text. The changes in style and meaning can even transform the character of the literary text. The opposite option that consists of recreating the marking --though scarcely accepted by translators and translation theorists— shows a higher degree of fidelity when one compares the target text with the original.
