On the Random Nature of Solar Radiation

Abstract

The randomly varying nature of both global and beam radiation on a yearly basis is investigated. Based on nearly 3000 days of simultaneous hourly horizontal global and normal beam radiation data for Bet Dagan, Israel, utilizability curves based on daily total radiation are found to be a good approximation to the corresponding curves for individual hour pairs, and the random nature of fluctuations in radiation about clear day values can be observed. A model which treats insolation as a stochastic variable is shown to provide accurate predictions of daily utilizability curves.
