Reflections on the Science of Translation

.
Babel: Revue internationale de la traduction/International Journal of Translation, (1997)

Abstract

The intentions of this article are threefold: (1) to analyze why translation theory has not developed as well as it should have; (2) to clear up the conceptual confusions encountered concerning the Science of Translation; and (3) to present a personal view on what the Science of Translation and especially translation theory should be like. The author attributes the underdevelopment of translation theory to such factors as empiricism, mysticism, dogmatism and lack of overview on the part of the translator and translation scholar.
