Bis zum Schluss war das Flugzeug des kanadischen Premiers Trudeau startbereit. Als dann die Nachricht kam, dass Regierung und Vertreter der Regionen in Belgien ihre Verhandlungen vertagen, sagte er die Teilnahme am CETA-Gipfel ab. Doch Kanada bleibt zuversichtlich.
Aufgrund des Vetos aus Wallonien wird Belgien dem Abkommen nicht zustimmen. Eine Einigung sei frühestens Ende des Jahres möglich, so der wallonische Ministerpräsident Magnette. Der EU-Kanada-Gipfel am Donnerstag, auf dem Ceta unterzeichnet werden sollte, wird damit ausfallen.
Das Bundeskabinett hat sich am Mittwoch doch nicht mit dem Ceta-Freihandelsabkommen zwischen der EU und Kanada befasst. Als Begründung wurden "verfahrenstechnische Gründe" genannt.
