Cochrane Clinical Answers - Fulltext - How does risperidone depot compare with oral antipsychotics in people with schizophrenia?

Description

When risperidone 25 to 75 mg administered as a depot injection was compared with oral antipsychotic drugs (risperidone, quetiapine, olanzapine, aripiprazole, or a range of oral antipsychotics across participants) in adults with schizophrenia, the only difference detected between groups was fewer people withdrawing from treatment due to lack of efficacy when compared with quetiapine; on average, 164 per 1000 people withdrew from risperidone depot compared with 303 per 1000 people from quetiapine. No differences were observed between risperidone depot and any oral antipsychotic in terms of relapse, change in mental state, mortality, hospitalization, adverse effects or withdrawal from treatment due to adverse events. However, where quality was assessed, evidence for most outcomes was very low to low quality; none was considered high quality. Also, the numbers of participants were often low, making it difficult to draw any firm conclusions regarding the relative effectiveness or safety of risperidone depot and oral antipsychotic drugs.
