In the past 15 years, there has been a 22% increase in the national suicide rate in the United States,1 while the total number of psychiatric hospital beds in the United States decreased from 34 to 22 beds per 100 000 residents.2 Bastiampillai et al2 suggest that the availability of psychiatric hospital beds may be a risk factor in a complex network of suicide risk factors.
