Although suicidal ideation and suicide attempts are quite common, the rate of death by suicide in the community is only about one in 10 000 per annum. A method that could identify a substantial proportion of future suicides without too many false positives would provide a useful focus for suicide prevention strategies and communication with patients and their families.
