Zum ersten Mal findet das Weltsozialforum in einem arabischen Land statt. Entsprechend groß sind die Erwartungen an das Treffen in Tunis. Das Mutterland des Arabischen Frühlings ist für die Macher der ideale Ort, um Globalisierungskritik mit gesellschaftlichem Wandel zu verbinden.
Der Westen blickt doppelgesichtig auf die arabische Welt: weil er selbst nicht so säkular ist, wie er tut – und weil er lange weltweit auf die Religiösen gesetzt hat. Oder anders gesagt: Den muslimischen Gesellschaften wurde nie eine Chance gegeben, eine säkulare Demokratie zu entwickeln.
