Große Schiffe kann die Technik der spanischen Grenzschützer schnell entdecken. Immer mehr Flüchtlinge aus Afrika versuchen daher, in Gummibooten über die Meerenge von Gibraltar zu kommen. Für die Helfer wird es damit schwer, sie zu retten.

Gut 300.000 Menschen haben im vergangenen Jahr Asyl gesucht in der EU. Ein immer größerer Teil von ihnen versucht, auf dem gefährlichen Seeweg in die "Festung Europa" zu gelangen. Welchen Weg nehmen sie - und warum?
Die Marulic-Straße im südkroatischen Metkovic liegt teilweise in der bosnischen Nachbargemeinde. Seit dem EU-Beitritt der Kroaten verläuft hier die Außengrenze der EU. Für die Anwohner bedeutet das langwierige Grenzkontrollen, die Wirtschaft im Ort ist in ihrer Existenz bedroht.

Gestrandet vor den Toren der Grenzstadt Oujda in Nordmarokko leben sie unter grünen Plastikplanen - und warten. Flüchtlinge wie Mohamed, Abdoullah oder Abou stecken hier fest - im Wartesaal nach Europa.
Nach ihrer Flucht aus Afrika lebten sie in Italien, ehe die Behörden dort die Aufnahmelager schlossen: Nun haben sich 300 Flüchtlinge nach Hamburg durchgeschlagen, wo sie auf der Straße leben - und bislang vergeblich auf Hilfe hoffen.

"Wir machen aus dem Mittelmeer einen Friedhof". Mit diesen Worten hat Maltas Premier ein Umdenken in der EU-Flüchtlingspolitik gefordert. 34 Menschen starben bei dem neuen Bootsunglück. 211 Menschen konnten gerettet werden.
Es ist rechtswidrig, Flüchtlinge ungeprüft in Drittstaaten abzudrängen oder zurückzuführen. Trotzdem ist die EU-Grenzschutztruppe Frontex nach wie vor an solchen Aktionen beteiligt - das haben Recherchen des ARD-Magazins <em>Monitor</em> ergeben.
Nach einem Urteil des Europäischen Gerichtshofs muss eine EU-Verordnung zur Überwachung des Mittelmeers hinsichtlich der Rettung Schiffbrüchiger überarbeitet werden. Das stört Italien, Frankreich, Spanien, Griechenland und Malta gewaltig
Im Flughafen von Lampedusa sind die Särge mit den Opfern des Bootsunglücks aufgebahrt - und täglich werden es mehr. Allein am Sonntag wurden über 30 Leichen geborgen. Und noch Dutzende sollen sich im Bauch des gesunkenen Schiffes befinden.
Den Flüchtlingen hätte schneller geholfen werden können, sagt die Bürgermeisterin von Lampedusa. Doch die "unmenschlichen" Gesetze Italiens und Europas hätten dies verhindert. Politiker diskutieren nun über eine Reform der Asylgesetze.
Politiker in ganz Europa diskutieren die Konsequenzen des Flüchtlingsunglücks. Die EU-Kommissarin Georgieva forderte, der Kontinent müsse "seine Grenzen offenhalten". Schlechtes Wetter behinderte derweil die Bergungsarbeiten vor Lampedusa.
Die Bestürzung in Brüssel angesichts des Flüchtlingsdramas vor Lampedusa ist groß, wird aber wenig Konsequenzen haben. Denn die EU hält an ihrem Ziel fest: Flüchtlinge fernhalten.
