Die UB Marburg hat im Herbst 1999 mit der Recherche nach NS-Raubgut begonnen und inzwischen fast alle in Frage kommenden Zugänge aus den Jahren 1933 bis 1950 durchgesehen. Die Titel der Bücher und die darin aufgefundenen Besitzvermerke wurden in einer Datenbank erfasst und öffentlich zugänglich gemacht.
In mehreren Fällen konnten bereits die rechtmäßigen Besitzer von beschlagnahmten oder enteigneten Büchern ermittelt werden. Bis heute wurden etwa 110 Bände zurückgegeben bzw. blieben auf Wunsch der rechtmäßigen Besitzer in der Universitätsbibliothek.
Die Lost Art Internet-Datenbank wird von der Koordinierungsstelle für Kulturgutverluste betrieben, einer Einrichtung des Bundes und der Länder der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Die Datenbank dient zur Erfassung von Kulturgütern, die infolge der nationalsozialistischen Gewaltherrschaft und der Ereignisse des Zweiten Weltkriegs verbracht, verlagert oder – insbesondere jüdischen Eigentümern – verfolgungsbedingt entzogen wurden.

Zur Problematik „Raub- und Beutekunst” im Zusammenhang mit Nationalsozialismus und Zweitem Weltkrieg ist in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten, insbesondere aber nach 1990, eine große Anzahl von Publikationen erschienen. Es handelt sich hierbei sowohl um Sachbücher, die dem Informationsbedarf einer interessierten breiten Öffentlichkeit entgegenkommen, als auch um historische, kunst- und kulturwissenschaftliche und juristische Fachliteratur.
