Die drei Kommunalarchäologien des Ruhrgebiets haben jetzt gemeinsam mit der Hochschule Bochum ein digitales Visualisierungsprojekt zu ausgewählten Themen der Archäologie und Geschichte entlang des Hellwegs entwickelt. Im Mittelpunkt stehen archäologische Ausgrabungsprojekte, mit denen über große Schritte die historische Zeitachse des Ruhrgebietes von der Vorgeschichte bis zur Gegenwart durchschritten werden soll. Das gewählte Verbreitungsmedium, die Internet-Plattform Google Earth, gewährleistet weltweit allen an der Geschichte des Ruhrgebietes Interessierten einen mühelosen Zugang und stärkt die Präsenz der Geschichtswissenschaften im Bereich der neuen Medien.

Der Verein "Archäologische Kulturlandschaft Ruhrgebiet e.V." bemüht sich darum, die Erforschung der archäologischen Denkmäler des Ruhrgebietes durch Ausgrabungen und deren Auswertung, durch Publikationen und Ausstellungen zu fördern. Darüber hinaus soll eine breite Öffentlichkeit durch Vortragsveranstaltungen, Studienfahrten und Veröffentlichungen über die reichhaltige Kulturlandschaft des Ruhrgebietes unterrichtet werden.
Mit rund 3.600 Mitgliedern (Stand 2007) ist die Gesellschaft eine der größten historischen Vereine in ganz Deutschland und ein wichtiger und aktiver Interessenverband für die Belange der Bodendenkmalpflege.
Vereinszweck ist die Förderung von Wissenschaft und Forschung zur Vor- und Frühgeschichte in unserem Land sowie die Erhaltung archäologischer Kulturdenkmale.
Das Westfälische Museum für Archäologie ist das zentrale Organ der westfälischen Archäologie mit Hauptsitz in Münster. Mit dem Amt für Bodendenkmalpflege und drei Museen erforscht, dokumentiert und präsentiert es Hinterlassenschaften vergangener Zeiten.
