Abstract
This document specifies Pairtree, a filesystem hierarchy for holding objects that are located within that
hierarchy by mapping identifier strings to object directory (or folder) paths two characters at a time. If
an object directory (folder) holds all the files, and nothing but the files, that comprise the object, a
"pairtree" can be imported by a system that knows nothing about the nature or structure of the
objects but can still deliver any object's files by requested identifier.
KEEP (Keeping Emulation Environments Portable) will develop emulation services (KEEP Emulation Services) to enable accurate rendering of both static and dynamic digital objects: text, sound, and image files; multimedia documents, websites, databases, videogames etc.
The overall aim of the project is to facilitate universal access to our cultural heritage by developing flexible tools for accessing and storing a wide range of digital objects. KEEP will also consider legal issues concerning the implementation of emulation-based systems and propose solutions which comply with European and national copyright laws.

The term over-the-air provisioning (OTA) describes the ability to download and install content over a wireless network, typically on demand. In this article we'll go over what OTA is, how it works, and how it affects you, for both MIDP 1.0 and MIDP 2.0. We'll also look at the server impacts - how any web site can be used as a download server, and how the new J2EE Client Provisioning specification looks at a high level. Note that even though this article will concentrate on OTA provisioning of applications, specifically Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP) applications (MIDlets), some of the concepts covered also apply to the provisioning of other types of content.
