US-Präsident Trump hat milliardenschwere Strafzölle gegen China angekündigt, China seinerseits wird einen Handelskrieg mit den USA nicht scheuen - weil es das nicht muss. Davon profitieren könnten die Handelsbeziehungen zwischen der EU und der Volksrepublik.
Rein vom Exportvolumen wird China die US-Strafzölle kaum zu spüren bekommen. Trotzdem wird bereits über Vergeltungsmaßnahmen spekuliert - und die könnten über Zölle für US-Produkte hinausgehen.
Gestern kamen die EU-Handelsminister zu einem informellen Treffen zusammen. Es ging um die letzte WTO-Ministerkonferenz, laufende Freihandelsverhandlungen und ausländische Direktinvestitionen. Und um US-Strafzölle.
Wenn die EU die globale regelbasierte Ordnung eines (relativ) freien Handels verteidigen will, darf sie den USA die Erhebung von willkürlichen und eigenmächtigen Zöllen nicht durchgehen lassen. Und bisher macht die EU-Kommission alles richtig: Ihre Strategie hat das Potenzial, ein vorzeitiges Ende von Donald Trumps Zöllen zu befördern und so den Schaden eines Handelskonflikts zu reduzieren. Welthandel und Wohlstand nahmen in den vergangenen Jahren dank der Globalisierung spürbar zu. Dennoch fordern viele Stimmen mehr Protektionismus. Doch Freihandels-Beschränkungen können rasch eskalieren und in einen Handelskrieg münden. Deutschland als exportorientierte Volkswirtschaft wäre besonders betroffen.
