UPGRADING OF AN EXISTING 275 kV TRANSMISSION LINE TO 380 kV MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL STRENGTH ANALYSIS

Abstract

Basic considerations on the problem of upgrading an existing transmission line from a 2 75 kV to a 380 kV system voltage are given. Mechanical strength analysis based on experience through more than 25 y ears with the existing line is discussed. Measures taken to fit the towers of the upgraded line to the heavier loads and increased electrical stresses are described. The cost involved is given some consideration. Laboratory tests performed in order to optimize phase conductor positions in the towers are presented. A computation of overvoltages and failure rates is carried out by a simulation method based on travelling wave technique, thereby taking into account that the upgraded part will have a slightly lower insulation strength than the rest of the line. It is concluded that upgrading of the actual line is feasible and can be justified also from an economical point of view.
