Needle angle changed with phi in stone pine. No sap flow observed during winter months. : Frozen soil, frozen parts of stem. No mass transport of water occurs during winter. Norway spruce was even more drought resistant than Stone Pine, so that wasn't the reason stone pine didn't embolise as much in winter. Embolism observed above vulnerability threshold (1.3MPa above it!) (this mean threshold for drought-induced tracheid aspiration or whatever?) so it was concluded that embolism was caused by a combo of phi and freezing. Refilling occurred while stem and root were still frozen and phi(stem) was still negative They don't think it likely that the parenchyma was active. They think it could be water movement from elsewhere i n the stem. The species that was more resistant has a higher altitudinal limit than the other one. This could be facilitated by its resistance to freeze/ thaw embolism.
