Abstract

What people in North America learn about other cultures and countries is often filtered through Western perspectives and sensibilities. One way to get beyond that sometimes-one-dimensional view is to sample stories of other countries and cultures as told by people who live in those lands and speak their languages. 1. Africa: African Vernacular, Afrikaans, French, and Portuguese -- 2. The Arab World: Middle East, Trans-Caucasus, and Western/Central Asia -- 3. East Asia: China, Japan, and Korea -- 4. South Asia: India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Other South Asian Countries -- 5. The Mediterranean: Greece, Israel, and Italy -- 6. Russia and Central and Eastern Europe -- 7. The Iberian Peninsula and Latin America -- 8. Northern Europe: Low Countries, Scandinavia, and Baltic Countries -- 9. Western Europe: Austria, Germany, France, Switzerland, French-Speaking Belgium, and French-Speaking Caribbean.
