Abstract

In the face of market uncertainty caused by intensifying competition, shortening time to market and blurring of industry and market boundaries, the ability to innovate is critical. One way in which established firms are addressing these new innovation challenges is to move from a closed model of innovation to a more open, or collaborative model. Implementing an open innovation strategy presents many operational challenges. This paper reports on the initial stages of an industrially-supported project to asses the operational capabilities required to implement open innovation successfully. Following a brief review of the current literature on open innovation, the core of this paper is the presentation and discussion of the results of 10 case studies of firms seeking to implement, or currently implementing, open innovation strategies. The emergence of skills development as a key issue for firms implementing open innovation is identified as the basis for further work in this area.
