Abstract
The recent evidence for a cosmological evolution of the fine structure
constant \alpha=e^2/c found from an analysis of absorption systems in the
spectra of distant quasars, is modelled by a cosmological scenario in which it
is assumed that only the speed of light varies. The model fits the spectral
line data and can also lead to a solution of the initial value problems in
cosmology.
