IMPROVED RELIABILITY OF OVERHEAD LINES BY CONTROLLING THE AEOLIAN VIBRATIONS OF CONDUCTORS

Abstract

In an Qverhead power transmission line (0.H.L.), the conductors represent a very important and expensive component and the most susceptible to failures due mainly to fatigue under aeolian vibrations. The know-how of today in this concern is characterized by the combination of field tests which deliver the actual vibration frequencies and vibration amplitudes with laboratory tests which lead to the material response under these conditions. These test procedures help to preventive maintenance as well as to the redesign or design of lines with improved reliability. The report recalls the principles of aeolian vibrations (observations, conductor response to wind), and gives a description of measuring methods on the field and in the laborat01y, with some applications.
