Abstract

In the Purposeful Algebraic Activity project1we have produced a teachingprogramme of spreadsheet-based tasks, using purpose and utility as the frameworkfor task design. Here we look in detail at the design of one of the tasks, using thenotions of visibility and invisibility to examine examples of pupils’ activity whenworking on this task and the role which perceptions of purpose play in the way inwhich transparency emerges.
