Abstract

Dufour gland secretions of the harvester antsPogonomyrmex barbatus, P. rugosusand P. maricopa wereinvestigated. The glandular blends exhibit species specificpatterns, but more importantly, based on indiviual profiles ofDufour gland contents of colony members it is possible toseparate the colonies from each other in each species. It ispossible that these collective colony specific cues serve aslonger lasting trunk route markers. Behavioral tests demonstratethat workers of P. rugosusprefer homing routes marked by members of their own colony to routes markedby a foreign conspecific colony.
