EU enlargement and its implications for the Translation Service

.
Language Matters, (2000)

Abstract

The likely implications of enlargement for the Translation Service were evident several years ago, leading it to initiate several measures with a view to meeting the challenge. The main development was to appoint an Adviser on Enlargement, whose duties broke down into six areas: The organization of translations into and out of non-EU languages. The organization of courses in the CEEC languages. The provision of technical advice and moral support for the government TCUs. The prospection of the freelance market in the CEECs. Contacts with university-level translator-training courses in the CEECs. The organization of visits to the SdT by CEEC officials active in the translation of EU legislation.
