MG 2008-05-08 This article has shown that, if taken alone, neither economic trends nor state policies completely explain the change that occurred in the inter-war period. more feminised domestic personnel is not necessarily a sign of modernity. SocINDEX with Full Text The article looks at the long-term evolution of domestic service in southern and northern Europe during the 20th century. According to French author Lucien Deslinières, hiring domestic servants would become increasingly difficult as education and welfare spread. The article also notes the domestic service found in fascist and non-fascist countries.
