We present a functional interpretation of a criterion for supersymmetry breaking recently proposed by Witten. We give a functional representation of the index Delta and discuss its properties. A topological explanation of Deltas as the winding number of a functional mapping introduced by Nicolai is given. The connection of Delta with the relevant geometric aspects of the non-perturbative physics is discussed.
