The article explores the role of the U.S. higher education in advancing democracy and its ideals. It focuses on the civic idealism of Benjamin Franklin on the ability of education to cultivate the civic values of students and provide them with practical skills needed to address social problems. Thus, the main purpose of education is service to society and to the nation. It discusses the development of educational programs for political participation of the colleges and universities in the country. Amy Gutmann, University of Pennsylvania president and political philosopher, states that the university has become an institution which is strongly oriented to advancing democratic and civic works.
