Abstract

The mean density of the oceanic crust has been evaluated based on seismic refraction data in combination with drilling results, laboratory studies of seismic properties of oceanic and ophiolitic rocks, and ophiolite lithostratigraphy. A value of 2.89 +- 0.04 Mg/cu m is arrived at. The usefulness of the three methods is compared, and it is concluded that the third method is preferable to the others because it takes into account the large-scale porosity of a basalt formation.
