Abstract

A fiber-optic system for the transmission of information on high voltage overhead power lines is described: it is characterized by the inclusion of the optical fiber in a selfsupporting telecommunication aerial cable which also has the function of a ground wire. Optical terminal equipment and digital multiplexers bring the information signals into a form suitable for transmission on such a cable. Mechanical stresses to which optical fiber is subjected are discussed both in the light of theoretical considerations and practical experience gained so far; likewise discussed are questions relating to cable construction and testing procedures as well as the effects which installation and operation of the aerial cable were found to have on optical fiber. The Paper deals with the performance characteristics of the transmission system, especially the behavior under electrical interference and severe weather conditions. Test results give proof that the system is suitable for high-quality telecommunication. Based on the experience gained in installation and operation of the optical transmission system, the au tho rs give in conclusion an assessment of the economy and the reliability to be expected .
