Abstract

The study informs on results of representative survey in Slovakia done in summer 2004, sample 575 respondents. The research was aimed at status and material situation of elderly people, their values and aims in life, their image on social services. Main problems of elderly are health problems (31,6%) and material problems (30,3%). The relatively good financial situation declare 15% of elderly people, almost a half of elderly report moderate financial restraints, but 34,2 % of elderly feel depressed. The most important values for elderly are: feel fit (90,6%), be able to selfcare (79,7%), be alive in peaceful social climate (74,6%), be material self-sufficient (68,7%), not be alone (62,4%) and be near by his/her children and help them (55%). Elderly image about care on themselves: fall back on children and family (48%), will request to place in home for elderly (8,6%), will request for care service (4,2%), will request for care in daily stationary (4%), will apply to charitable organization. Elderly image on social services necessity: placement in health care facilities (58,1%), placement in rest homes (43,9%), catering in dining rooms for pensioners (52,1%), clubs for pensioners (45,8%).
