Abstract

... Education, whether institutionalized or not, is about the shaping of subjectivity. In times of relative social stability this hardly emerges as an issue, because the subjectivities that served in the past and serve in the present will also serve in the future: and so the issue remains invisible. Other issues emerge ? about kinds of subjectivities, about the social hierarchies into which they are integrated, about the assignation of individuals to purposes, and these can become troublesome. Now, when we have anything but stability, the purposes of education, its very continuation in institutional form, are under challenge, and we need to ask what is crucial, socially, in shaping subjectivity? What forms of subjectivity should education provide? ...
